Dance music was always about having fun. It’s an ethos that has not escaped Cesar Merveille, the Paris-born enchanter whose ascent through the ranks of house and techno has been powered 1 8 weed by an irrepressible joie de vivre, matched only by a desire to be challenged by everything he does.
Encouraged by creative freedom during his formative years, Cesar learnt to listen to his instincts and keep a healthy dose of soul in everything he turned his hand to.
The following years, spent immersed in London’s underground, soon found Cesar holding residencies for such fabled parties as Lo-Kee and the T-Bar. It was his later partnership with Cadenza that propelled really Cesar to the world stage, providing a platform for his music to reach a broad audience and enabling him to command dancefloors big and small the world over.
Such exposure has also given rise to new artistic ventures, most notably working with long-time friend Ryan Crosson on the “DRM” project. The full-length album from the pair came to light on Visionquest, providing space for them to explore textures and moods unconstrained by the dancefloor’s demands.
From his current base in Berlin, Cesar has embraced the natural workflow of hardware production, immersing himself in a studio powered by machines and intuition. His new label Roche Madame is a product of this, channeling the creative energy of musical allies to give rise to new collaborations. Inspired by a secret family location off the coast of Brittany, the label is both a tribute to his roots and a celebration of the here and now, a moment that Cesar is forever living in.
Constantly feeding off his environment, Cesar’s unbridled energy finds him operating both as a world-class DJ, and as an artist embracing innovation whilst committed to his grounding principle of music as pleasure.

RA Poll – Top albums of 2011 : Nicolas Jaar’s Space Is Only Noise hits #1
I made most of Space Is Only Noise at 5 PM, right after I came home from school, probably the most boring time of the day. I made most of the stuff during the summer, when I had nothing to do all day. Just having a nice meal in the morning, maybe reading a nice book and then making some music. It’s music that I made from the ages from 17 – 20, so it spans a lot of different time. It wasn’t like I sat down for two months and wrote it: it was a three year process.
For a while I thought I was going to write my thesis on Henri Bergson, the French philosopher, because I really fell in love with his ideas of time. So I curated the album with those thoughts in mind. But then the album became way too ethereal and I was not OK with that. I wanted it to be grounded in something much dirtier and more disgusting. I wanted it to have something bad inside of it, maybe something evil. When I made the track “Space Is Only Noise If You Can See” the album became more complete. I knew that it needed something like that.
I had a deadline with Circus Company of a Thursday, I think, and on that Wednesday night I wrote “Balance Her In Between Your Eyes,” which is one of my favorite songs off the album. I wrote it with my computer speakers because my other speakers weren’t working. But I guess what I realized this year is that the writing of the album wasn’t the writing of the songs. It was the three months I took to turn it into some sort of weird bastard DJ set of the songs I really like. That’s something I realized lately more than ever: Just how much of a DJ set I actually saw it as.
– Nicolas Jaar
Thomas Murphy started playing music at young age with his friends, starting in squats in Paris and quickly developing in bars and clubs. In 1999 he co-founded Circus Company with Sety and Nico (one half of Nôze) and started releasing tracks on the early Circus Company compilations. His tracks are weird, beautiful, funky, funny, mind bending material from across the dance- music spectrum. In 2001 he also released a track for the French compilation on Karat records.

Paris house music scene in The Guardian
Tony Naylor (The Guardian) gives his feeling about the Paris house scene:
Has house music met its Paris match?
The French capital has produced an array of eccentric talent that is coming at the dancefloor at a tangent. Far be it from the Guardian Music blog to succumb to hype, much less reinforce lazy national stereotypes, but, undeniably, something is stirring in Paris. Something which, after the brash, filtered robo-house of Daft Punk and the juggernaut electro of Justice, is bringing a certain Gallic sophistication, a certain restraint and eccentricity, to French club music.
